I know that they robbed banks to get money, but I wonder if some of them were also getting aid from the state of California. I'm not sure how it was back then, but today when you get an apartment you have to sign a lease, fill out an application and prove you have a job, or getting benefits, that you will be able to pay the rent. They seemed to move in and split whenever they wanted. I would think their name would be on the lease that they would've been tracked down when they set fire to the first apartment trying to destroy evidence.
