A Buddhist altar, or butsudan, is a feature of many homes in Japan. Family members kneel before them seeking guidance from the realm of enlightenment, and engaging with memories of lost loved ones. Many butsudan are made by teams of expert artisans. Our expert guest is Kazunori Jokai, the 11th generation owner of a butsudan supplier that's been in business for 300 years. 今も日本の多くの家庭に鎮座する仏壇。家の中で本尊と先祖をまつることができるもので、本来は寺院をミニチュア化したものだ。そこには彫金やまき絵など日本古来の伝統工芸がふんだんに使われ、極楽浄土の世界が表現されている。朝晩仏壇の前で手を合わせる姿は、子供の情操教育にもなってきた。今回は、長野県飯山で３００年前から仏壇作りを続けている仏壇店の１１代目である上海一徳さんとともに仏壇と日本人の関わりを紹介する。
