They were ex military - something like that was mentioned.

Key word there is "EX military". The military doesn't let you take the weapons with you when you are discharged. Veterans have to follow the same weapons laws as everybody else.

Hawaii is part of the u.s and a lot of civilians in the u.s seem to have access to some pretty powerful assault rifles

Wrong. Civilians do not have easy access to fully automatic weapons in the US.

Semi automatics are easily adapted and with so many different types and amounts of weapons available legally. I'd imagine the weapons available on the black market would have to be real fully automatic assault rifles. Otherwise what's the point. Just walk into a gun shop in the right state and grab a semi that can be adapted to fire on full auto

Actually, they are not easily adapted into fully automatic weapons. If they were mass shooters would be using them. I can't think of a single mass shooting that had a fully automatic weapon. They are always semi-automatic. Even the guy in Las Vegas who was a millionaire and spent tons of time and money acquiring weapons couldn't get one modified into a full auto so he used the "bump stocks" to make his semi auto weapons fire as fast as possible. Bump stocks (which should be banned) make the weapon extremely inaccurate which is why his target had to be a crowd of thousands of people standing shoulder to shoulder.

You are misinterpreting what i said. Semi automatics are easily adaptable. With bump stocks as per your example. So if some bloke can easily get hold of that type of weaponry (which is what he did by all accounts) then logic dictates that professional criminals must be able to get hold of more powerful weapons on the black market(ie fully automatic assault rifles). Otherwise they'd go to any gun shop or gun show(in the right state) and buy semi automatic assault rifle and and adapt it. This is not a rant on the 2nd amendment. I'm just pointing out that it is an acceptable situation in this show to show ex military personnel that have become professional criminals and have them sporting fully automatic assault weapons. It's a perfectly acceptable leap in logic

I don't think those surfer dudes were professional criminals. Maybe I missed something. But they were not using bump stocks. They had actual fully automatic weapons. Which very few professional criminals have. For example, the vast majority of organized crime hits are committed with pistols. If you use a full auto then you have to deal with the Federal ATF as well as the local police. A bump stock does not change a semi auto into a full auto, it just causes the trigger to be pulled faster then a person could normally pull it. Also, it has severe draw backs; accuracy as I mentioned and it causes the weapon to jam (as happened in Las Vegas). So ex military guys would not use a crude device like that.

It's a fake tv show made for for our entertainment. The leaps in logic are within acceptable bounds. I think you are having a completely different discussion to the one that i'm having. Fact:you can buy semi automatic assault rifles in the u.s that can be simply and legally adapted to behave in a similar manner to fully automatic assault rifles using a bump stock (hope that was accurate enough for you, seeing as you're being so pedantic). So therefore in fake t v land. It isn't an unreasonable leap in logic to have ex military personnel that have become professional criminals and think that they should be able to get their hands on fully automatic assault rifles on the black market. Remember, this is all make believe for our entertainment. You however seem intent on proving some political point about the American 2nd amendment and u.s gun culture. Calm down and chill out. Not everything has to be real and factual. While there are bounds of reason. Practically every fake, made up show tv show and film will have stuff that is not possible and made up to make the story more fun, gritty, or entertaining and the fact is this particular leap in logic is acceptable.
