he doesn't seem like he deserves to be here..... I mean he wasted his life but he never hurt anyone but himself and he didn't even abuse himself but just never made any decisions would have helped him fin joy in life.

Chidi made life miserable for the people around him from his sheer wimpiness . His mother became a drug addict because he didn't visit her in the hospital because he already promised someone else he would see a movie. He guilted his best friend into making him his best man, then almost ruined his wedding. He became "boot buddies" then overblew it into a crisis for days before he finally admitted to his friend at his hospital bedside that he hated his boots.
Don't think these were isolated incidents. More like a typical day in the life of Chidi.
Imagine being in the real Good Place and listening to some guy yammer on for days that he should have had the fries instead of onion rings after making you wait three hours for him to order.
Chidi is afraid to make a wrong choice, and he needs to learn that there isn't always a wrong choice, and even if there is, you learn from it and move on.

okay thanks now I can see why he's there. damn kind of sucks for him since he doesn't seem like an actual bad guy who wants to hurt people but he ended up in the bad place.

Yeah, Chidi is a good person who does bad things. Contrasted with Tahini, who is a bad person who does good things. It will be interesting to see how the dynamic plays out in the third season.

whole I didn't see that, and I guess Eleanor is a bad person who knowingly does a bunch of bad shit and really good since she is clever and Jason is a bad person who does a bunch of bad stuff unknowingly since he is too dumb to understand morals. they are like opposites too.

I think Chidi simply HAS to be in the show because the show's main point is to help us consider what exactly is "good" or "bad"in humanity. While he may not be deliberately evil, is he really a good person? My answer is that there is a wide range of grey. We all probably recognize the moral shortcomings of the non human 'judges'; we also recognize the obvious moral flaws of Eleanor; but what of the other characters? Does the 'stupidity' of Jason or the 'pride' of Kahani count too? This is what the show allows us all to explore individually.

If you've seen Season 3 you'll know why Chidi and everyone else is in The Bad Place...
