The first episode introduces us to Caitlin Seeger, a tough street-wise 14-year old from Philadelphia who is in trouble with the law. Caitlin's mother died when she was only 8 years old. She has been in and out of foster homes since her mother's death, but she has never again found the love that her mother once gave her. The streets of Philadelphia have been tough on Caitlin, but her rebellious personality and her love of photography have helped her to survive in her own unique way.
Caitlin's world, however, is about to change forever. She soon finds herself in over her head after she gets in trouble with the law one too many times. She is expelled from the Catholic school she is attending. Caitlin is given the choice of either going to juvenile hall or of moving to High River, Montana to live with a cousin that she has never met nor even heard of. Boundaries
Caitlin goes to see Bandit the horse and ends up falling asleep in the barn. But after Caitlin uses Griffen's shirt as a rag, they get in trouble for fighting, and Dori makes them both make dinner. But then Bandit runs away. Caitlin get mad at Griffen for talking for her in class so she goes into the guys' bathroom to have it out with him, but they end up in trouble and have to clean the bathroom up. Although the teacher lets then leave early so they won't miss the bus, they do miss it and have to walk home. On the way home they spot Bandit and Caitlin calms the horse down and walks him home. Caitlin and Griffen finally are starting to get along.

In Science class, Caitlin and Griffen must do a science project where they drop an egg from 30 ft. without breaking it. Griffen's partner, the most popular girl in school, uses him and has griffen do the project by himself.

Caitlin's social worker arrives to examine Caitlin's progress and to decide whether or not to allow Caitlin to stay with the Lowes. Things start to go wrong shortly after the social worker arrives. Caitlin is seen near the cash register in a department store shortly before $200 turns up missing. The money is later found in Caitlin's backpack. Caitlin says that she didn't take the money but nobody believes her. Jim is about to arrest Caitlin but Caitlin escapes on Griffen's new bike.
Griffen later sees his bike outside of the school. He goes into the school and finds Caitlin developing pictures of Griffen performing stunts on his new bike. One of the pictures shows Ryan Zorn in the background putting the money into Caitlin's pack. The picture proves that Caitlin is innocent. Caitlin confronts Ryan later as he is being brought into the sheriff's office. She says, ""You set me up."" Ryan responds that he just wanted Caitlin to have the cash so that she could get a new camera case or a lens.

Caitlin's class goes on a camping trip, and Taylor and Caitlin are made partners in a tent. The teacher gets ill, and Dori and Jim are the chaperones. Caitlin and Taylor go to get firewood, and the girls forget their survival sheet. Taylor falls in the river, and Caitlin uses Griffin's guitar to rescue her.
