Well this turned out to be a right turd. It started brilliantly then just got increasingly implausible and trashy, culminating in a final episode that was so gobsmackingly stupid it made me curse the few good bits for keeping me coming back for more torture.
Or was this the point? The series creators wanted us to feel like one of Mick’s victims in a genius meta-game with the audience? No.
It’s hard to believe that Greg McLean had a hand in molesting his own masterpiece. The first film is a horror classic that relentlessly haunts the imagination after you’ve seen it - how do you go from THAT to THIS?
The only worthwhile thing was seeing Mick again, but his appearances were far too brief and his backstory actually diluted the iconic menace of his character. I got the sense that Jarratt insisted on appearing as little as possible, and having the character toned down so the lust for rape and drawn out torture was reduced.
I also got an SJW vibe from the endless rapey white guys Eve had to fend off and assistance from magical angelic minorities, with the slight exception of Sullivan.
As the series drew to a close it was clear that these writers had no idea what they were doing, it was all so arbitrary with no internal logic and suicidally stupid characters. In this day and age of Game Of Thrones you cannot afford to churn out thoughtless junk like this, especially when it carries the prestige of ‘Wolf Creek’.
Anyone know if the second season is as bad?
