Discuss Bates Motel

It looks like they cast the singer Rihanna to play Marion Crane. Here is the link: http://ew.com/tv/2017/01/31/bates-motel-rihanna-photos-video/

How do y'all feel about that? I personally am not feeling this casting because I feel like it's stunt casting which this show does not need. From looking at her acting resume, it looks like she's only been in like three things where she's not playing herself, including voicing a cartoon character in a movie. I don't understand why they couldn't cast an actual actress with more experience and not a known pop singer.

She is only slotted for two episodes so it's not that big of a deal for me. Besides in the movie Marion Crane's big claim to fame is being stabbed to death in the shower within the first 20 minutes or so into the movie. Other than being a plot device she really wasn't that big of a character.

That's what I keep telling myself, at least the character will die and we won't have to see her too long. Am I mistaken, but I thought in the original story the reason Norman was drawn to Marion was because she looked like Norma. I guess they are doing that storyline with the Loomis woman.

The original Marion Crane may not have been a great character to a lot of people, but her death became iconic, so there's a lot of anxiety surrounding her arrival. I don't know how I feel about Rihanna being cast for the role, because I have never seen her acting. She's a beautiful woman, which the original character also was. I actually don't know if we'll see her dying, like in the Hitchcok film, since this is not a replica. Is Marion supposed to be Sam's lover? I'm guessing she will be, but I could be wrong.

I've recently really gotten into Rihanna's music and very much looking to see her acting chops. I think she's going to surprise everyone. Her voice is way up there for me with Aguilera etc. and she's stunning to boot.

Maybe she got overshadowed by Norman Bates, but the film Marion Crane was an utterly superb character and Janet Leigh actually got an Oscar nomination for the role. To me, Marion is the 2nd most important character in the Psycho mythology.

No, you are absolutely right. This is the exact reason I was confused about the casting. I'm sure it will work out fine. The show has done really well so I assume they know what they're doing but it's definitely an odd choice as seen by an outsider.

I haven't read the original story (though I should) but I have seen "Psycho" more than a couple of times and I don't remember any mention of Marion looking like Mrs. Bates, so this aspect was cut out from the 1960 film as well, and it didn't really hurt the story whatsoever. I mean, one can easily assume that Norman was drawn to Marion because she was an attractive woman, which prompted "mother" to murder her.
