After the incident crossing the river, Badger is spotted still alive but caught in some reeds. Toad, Hare and weasel swim over to help Badger get untangled before they all swim back to land. Fox is nowhere to be found so Kestrel files downstream to see if she can find him. She sees him lying on the log heading under a bridge but as the log appears on the other side Fox is no longer there. Badger is assigned as the new leader and to add to matters Toad forgets which way to go. Owl suggests this is because his homing instincts have come into play. Hare and Vole inform Badger that Mrs. Fieldmouse has given birth to her young. Badger suggests that the animals should stop to rest for the time being.

Halbertrunken wird Dachs durch die vereinten Bemühungen der kleineren Tiere aus dem Fluss gerettet. Doch von Fuchs fehlt jede Spur. Traurig sinnen sie über die Zukunft ohne ihren Anführer nach. Maulwurf entkommt gerade noch dem Maul eines Hechtes und Kröte verliert ihren Orientierungssinn. Die Thalerwald-Tiere sind völlig entmutigt. Da bekommen die Feldmäuse Junge und weigern sich, weiterzuwandern.

Tasso viene ritrovato e tratto in salvo con difficoltà dalle acque del fiume. Di Volpe non si sa più nulla. Non resta che rimettersi in marcia, e Tasso assume il comando della compagnia, subendo per questo le critiche di Gufo. Ma Rospo non riesce più come prima a trovare la strada, per colpa dell'istinto territoriale che lo attira di più verso il Bosco Natìo. Come se non bastasse, a bloccare di nuovo il cammino c'è la nascita dei piccoli dei Topolini, che si ritrovano quindi in grande difficoltà a proseguire il viaggio in queste condizioni.
