Biography

Fernando Cortizo Rodríguez, born in 1973 in Santiago de Compostela, is a Galician director and screenwriter. After practicing for a time as a veterinarian, he became interested in real-image cinema, and made two real-image short films, before moving on to stop-motion animation with the short film Black Cat Spantat. After this first experience, in 2007 he created Artefacto Producciones, where he made O Boiro, O Ladrón de Dollecas, Leo, Sombras na noite and Promesa.

In 2009, he began the production of his first feature film, The Apostle, being the first European film in stereoscopic stop motion. For the project, he managed to involve technicians from the biggest world productions, as well as the North American musician Philip Glass for the realization of the soundtrack. The film won numerous international awards such as: ANNECY Audience Award (France 2013), Fantasporto Jury Award (Portugal 2013), Animamundi Winner (Brazil 2013), Best Film Animpact (Korea 2013), Best Film Expotoons (Argentina 2012) ), in addition to a nomination at the 2013 Goya Awards, in the best animated film category.
