"A Woman" is a cinematic essay about identity. A search into the wounds of exile and a reflection on the function of memory. A haunting and intimate portrait of the director’s own mother. It is the story of an imitation artist, trying to adapt to the challenges of real life … as a woman.

Die Filmemacherin Jeanine Meerapfel versucht anhand ihrer eigenen Familiengeschichte das Leben ihrer verstorbenen Mutter nachzuvollziehen. Ihre Reise führt sie vom Burgund ins Elsass, von dort über Deutschland nach Holland und schließlich nach Argentinien. Die Lebensgeschichte ihrer Mutter zeigt Jeanine den Zusammenhang privater Erinnerungen mit der Zeitgeschichte, was der Regisseurin ein besseres Selbstverständnis lehrt.
