So I don't think the writers and the director even tried to do something original. I think they just like cult horror movies so much they wanted to make their own tribute and to combine various ideas from these movies to show their appreciation. I mean, The Abyss is obvious inspiration for location, The Thing is obvious inspiration for visual effects and the sense of isolation and paranoia, girl running around in her underwear and fights big monster is just direct wink to Alien. And it's just the obvious stuff, I would bet there are multiple other references to other great horror movies if I start digging deeper. The movie is so predictable in his attempt to just follow all the checkboxes, that the moment you see Anya character on the screen you just know that at some point she will show some skin. It is mandatory according to the rules of the cult horror, so obviously it happens.
Unfortunately, seeing truly beautiful Milena Radulović running in her underwear with some gratuitous shots of her body, is the biggest highlight of this movie and only one of the few good things going on in it. The movie could be easily much shorter and more to the point. The writing could've been more focused, the plot less complicated and the true nature of the characters shouldn't be revealed right from the moment we see them. I mean, we know within 10 minutes that the main scientist is sabotaging the mission, he just directly says so and acts in every way to fulfill his plan. The plot was suppose to reveal it gradually and with a twist, giving him more time to act as a saboteur without others suspecting him. There are many other examples like that.
So while the writers and the director clearly appreciate great horror movies, they are still can't write or direct one themselves. Even if it is just to pay a tribute.
