Sequel to the 1967 movie Hong Gildong. In the middle of the Yi Dynasty, when the government's national defense power was weakened and the people's livelihood was in ruin due to the actions of Tamgwan-ori, barbarians from the north began an invasion, putting the country's fortunes in jeopardy. Accordingly, Hong Jeong-seung, Hong Gil-dong's biological father and a member of the Left Council, organized the Hwalbin Party and recommended Hong Gil-dong, who had committed crimes against the country, to the king, and the king willingly appointed him as the vanguard of the Northern Expedition and sent him on a campaign. Hong Gil-dong fights bravely, defeats the barbarians, rescues his fiancée who was kidnapped by the barbarians, and returns home.

이조 중엽 조정은 탐관오리의 행패로 국방력은 약해지고 민생은 도탄에 빠졌을 때, 북쪽의 오랑캐들이 침략을 시작하여 국운이 위기에 처하게된다. 이에 홍길동의 생부이며 좌의정인 홍정승은 과거 활빈당을 조직하여 나라에 죄를 지었던 홍길동을 왕에게 천거하고 왕은 기꺼이 그를 북벌 선봉장으로 등용하여 출정시킨다. 홍길동은 용감히 싸워 오랑캐를 무찌르고 오랑캐에게 납치되었던 약혼녀를 구하여 금의환향한다.
