Jim and Dennis

Whenever I see this show, I mostly just enjoy the episodes. But there's one bit in particular that always hits me especially hard. In the episode "Sleight of Hand" where Jim Rockford calls Detective Dennis Becker after Jim's girlfriend disappears following their return from a beach trip, and her daughter is now at the house without her mother, Dennis starts off with the usual cocky-camaraderie stuff. Then Jim tells him to "bring a matron." Dennis has been a cop for a long time, his heart must have really sank when he heard that.

Did they ever explain how Jim and Dennis became friends?

Not that I recall. Which is a far cry from some other shows, such as "The Odd Couple" where I think they had at least 3 different episodes about how Oscar (Jack Klugman) and Felix (Tony Randall) first met, all mutually contradictory. A sign of the times, no doubt, when it was unlikely that anyone saw the episodes over and over in syndication, decades later.
