Discuss Ossan's Love

Item: Ossan's Love

Language: en-US

Type of Problem: Incorrect_content

Extra Details: Different titles in this franchise have multiple entries on TMDb which need cleaned up, though I'm not sure how.

The Ossan's Love franchise began with a self-contained, 49-minute TV play broadcast in December 2016, as part of an anthology series of three such plays that aired on subsequent nights, under the umbrella title 年の瀬 変愛ドラマ (the other two plays are titled 緊Q不倫速報 and 恋するJKゾンビ and don't seem to be on TMDb, though technically should be).

All three, from their descriptions, seem like they were made as "backdoor pilots", shown in this way as a way of testing them out on viewers, though out of them only Ossan's Love went on to be remade as a series. So I'm not sure whether the three plays should be a TV series titled 年の瀬 変愛ドラマ together, or stored as separate movies, or as separate TV shows. The rules are a bit vague when it comes to self-contained TV plays broadcast under one umbrella name like this.

Then there's the question of whether the 2016 Ossan's Love should be stored separately from the 2018 series that sprang from it (whether in an anthology series or as a movie in itself), or as the pilot episode of the series. They do not share the same continuity (the series remakes the play, not continues it, and has a party different cast playing the same characters), if that makes a difference, as well as that the play was a "backdoor" pilot rather than one officially presented as such.

Currently the 2016 TV play is stored as both a movie in itself and as episode 0 of the TV series. I think one needs to be removed, but I'm not sure which. I suspect it's the "episode 0" that should go, but I think this decision needs the authority of an admin.

The other big problem is with the second TV series in the franchise, Ossan's Love –in the sky– (2019). This is another loose remake in a different, "alternate universe" from both the 2016 TV play and 2018 first TV series, not a continuation. Currently it is entered as both a TV series in itself and as a second season to the first TV series. One needs to go, and I think it's the separate series, as otherwise TMDb doesn't have a way of linking them.

One small thing is that the official website field is locked for English, even though the URL is to a Japanese site. The English page for the series is https://tv-asahicontents.com/en/program/ossanslove

We follow the format of the original release. So here.

I removed both.

I kept them as two entries. That's technically how they were released and I think it makes more sense plot-wise.

There only one common homepage field for all TV translations. So the original website is prioritized.

I’m very happy to go along with these decisions if that’s what’s been ruled, and what’s been done to set up the anthology series that the original TV play was in now makes it easy to fill in the information for that.

Though I would like to ask what kind of things it is that makes the two seasons of Ossan’s Love separate shows, while American Horror Story and American Crime Story, in which each season a separate story, each count as singe series?

Is it that those were meant as anthologies from the start, whereas Ossan’s Love (like some other East Asian drama series) seems to have had an alternate universe version made as a response to the popularity of a show originally intended to be only one season (and therefore not left open for a direct sequel)?

We always try to follow the format of the original release. The major difference is sequels to East Asian shows are almost always released as individual TV series. We're making an exception to our rules when we put them on the same entry. They really can't be compared to American TV series clearly released as one series with multiples seasons.
