Well, I've seen the first 5 episodes so far. I like it, the first episode is the weakest so far. Henry Cavil's Geralt is ok, but a little wooden (like most the roles he's played). It's fine for what's needed, as the series focuses on the females more anyway. I really dug Yennefer's backstory. Ciri's story was a little confusing until episode 5 (even then you kind of had to pay attention to a small detail mentioned in order to understand). I'm not sure how I feel about the changes to Triss, because she's hardly been in it as of episode 5. What do y'all think (so far)?

There's actually a very different reason, which I won't spoil. They did give a clue, however, when it was mentioned that if Nilfgaard had Ciri, she would become Empress.

Empress of the world or continent? Didn’t in the game she had a choice to become a witcher and Geralt discouraged her from it?

Her grandparents said during the banquet Ciri would become Empress of Nilfgaard if they took her, so they knew that Nilfgaard was sending an invading force specifically for her. Also, the grandparents didn't know Ciri had any powers until her outburst during the Nilfgaard attack, so how could the Nilfgaard know it? They didn't, so there is a completely different reason why they (specifically the White Flame) want Ciri. Another clue if you're trying to piece it together (without looking it up) is that Queen Calanthe, Ciri's grandmother, is a terrible selfish person.
In the game, what ultimately happens to Ciri (either remain a Witcher or become Empress of Nilfgaard) completely depends on how Geralt treats her.

But why did you have to do research? I feel as if a show has to stand on its own w/o referring to a book for reference.

Some things the showrunners are trying to keep a mystery until future seasons. The reason why they're after Ciri is not really important to the story they were trying to tell in the 1st season. Later it will be.

Why would they do that? That turns away a lot of potential viewers who lost interest after the first and second episodes.
Plus, this isn't a whodunit.
It's not even sci-fi.
To me, a fantasy show has to set down rules and reasons. Now, if there is a twist, that's cool. You can add that in future seasons or episodes, but a fantasy flick has a certain formulas -- like all genres -- to follow.

There's a twist. Right now they just want people to assume that the Nilfgaard want to invade the north and need Ciri's powers to do that, but left clues that are contrary to it (there's actually a lot more clues than I've mentioned). That way when the twist comes, people could look back on the previous episodes and say, ah I see they were foreshadowing it all along. It's how all twists work.

You got more from watching the Witcher than I did.

I'm a gamer, so I knew a lot of what was going to happen and what will happen in the future before watching it, therefore I caught a lot of things most people who never played the game or know little about the lore wouldn't.

It is a bit confusing, but I like the combination of fantasy and time travel. It will be interesting to see how similar or different it is from the game.
