Discuss A Series of Unfortunate Events

My 10 year old and I can't stand this show. Narration rarely adds any value and often robs the script of better storytelling devices. This is certainly the case here, and the fact that they use it so often is annoying. Having the characters repeat verbatim what the narrator says is equally annoying. After two episodes we're out.

I feel like the narration is sometimes very drawn out, but that is to be expected when a font 20 150 paged book is adapted into 2+ hours.

Jeremy would obviously go crazy.

That being said... I disagree with you on this particular series. It's purposely over the top and exploits those annoying clichés that make other stuff stink. The whole concept is to overexagerrate everything and to make fun of overly stereotyped, unidimensional characters doing obviously evil or nonsensical stuff in B-series, soap operas, etc. That's why you get count Olaf, for example, dropping a floor lamp of all things through the window onto Monty's head and apologizing saying "oh my God, I'm sorry, I was being careless with this very heavy lamp that I accidentally dropped through this previously unopened window onto your head" and Monty not realizing he did it on purpose.

Narration is the same. It is purposely too long, often a bit off topic, as with those narrators in comedy or feel-good movies that sort of wander off as though they were talking to themselves and got carried away before apologizing and getting back on topic... a procedure that sucks, never works and is corny as hell except in Disney movies, and even.

Personnally, I think the Snicket character being a physically present but invisible, or more or less of an extra, to the characters, and always being dressed in a way that matches the scenery (I loved the first scene at the beach where he was wearing a bathing suit), is really nice. I think it fits the concept very well and his seriousnes is just perfect.

I would, however, agree that it does sometimes drag on a little too long to my taste. I remember last episode I watched (I'm only at the fourth so far)at some point I just stopped paying attention to what he said. And I didn't like him being in a boat. But yeah, in general I think it's pretty much accurate to the style.
