International singer, songwriter, and guitarist Douglas Gittings is interviewed by Dr. Debra Peppers on the Outreach Connection program.

Douglas tried to take a vacation to relax in historic Clarksville, Missouri, on the Mississippi. The next day he found – and bought – a 150 year old church and began restoration to create the “Missouri Music Hall”. Doug spent that winter working on the restoration of the Music Hall, until the spring rains of 2008 brought the flood to Clarksville. The events of the flood would dramatically affect the life of Doug Gittings.

Douglas offered shelter in the Music Hall to a young couple who were displaced by the flood. Somewhere along the line they decided to murder Doug, pawn his musical equipment and personal possessions, then start a new life in another state. Their attack was fierce, with knives and hammers, but unsuccessful. Doug fought back and held the young man on the ground in submission until the Pike County (Missouri) Sheriff's Department arrived – all the while bleeding from head wounds.

Due to a lifelong commitment of artistic self–expression, and a deep influenced by St. Louis’s Albert King, the first blues man Doug began writing the song “Missouri Bottom Road” from his hospital bed, returned to the Music Hall and threw himself into the recording, mixing, and mastering several songs for his latest CD.

Janet Veach: Director of Public Relations and Teresa Taylor from the Quincy Illinois area Alzheimer’s Association sit down with Dr. Debra Peppers on the Outreach Connection Program.

The Alzheimer's Association's annual Memory Walk

The winning nursing home receives a traveling trophy to keep for a year. After the episode aired it was learned that The defending champ is Sunset Home, which raised $2,218 in 2009. That figure was part of the $30,753 raised toward programs and materials the Quincy Area Branch provides for the five-county area it covers. Caregivers and family members of those with Alzheimer's in Adams, Hancock, Brown, Pike and Schuyler counties are the chief beneficiaries.

Janet Veach, who is the manager of the Quincy Area Branch and director of public relations director for the Central Illinois Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, says staff members at the nursing homes come up with all sorts of often-unique fundraising schemes.

Theresa Taylor, unit coordinator of the Alzheimer's residence at Sunset Home, says being part of the defending nursing home champion is nice, but the reason for the contest should not be forgotten.

"We're delighted to be the defending champion, but raising money for the Memory Walk is the most important thing," Taylor said. "It's nice to see how this has grown over the years and that more nursing homes are taking part.

Taylor said part of Sunset's fundraising efforts this year included bed races along with raffling a scooter donated by Traeder's TNT.

Tough Guys Inc. was showcased on WTJR TV on the Quincy Illinois affiliate of the Christian Television Network. Husband and wife team Neil and Tiffany Pikulski sat down with DR. Debra Peppers sharing the testimonies and what Tough Guys Inc is all about.

Tough Guys Inc. , is a small corporation with a goal of fighting for lives, geared around helping kids. Tough Guys Inc. is a clothing line, fundraiser company, and character program. Within the corporation there are other divisions, and Tough Girls Inc. is one. Tough Guys Inc. feels that you don't have to be a fighter, weight lifter, popular, or fit a certain persona to be a tough guy or girl. You have to possess the will to fight back when you are faced with adversity, no matter the situation. Kids that have terminal illnesses and catastrophic diseases are tough in their own right. For them to fight through the test, surgeries, and other altering processes, they give new meaning to the word TOUGH. Tough Guys Inc. chose St. Louis Children's Hospital in St. Louis, MO for a nine month fundraiser to benefit the tough guys and tough girls who call the hospital their home. Placing the Tough Guys Inc. trademarked logos on wearable items and a portion of the sales Tough Guys Inc. and Tough Girls Inc. went to benefit the hospital in 2010.
