J.T. and Shelly are all set to celebrate their three-month anniversary with a romantic weekend getaway until J.T. realizes he's already committed to play in a basketball tournament with his friends, and despite his attempt to soften the blow of canceling the trip with dinner and gifts, he still lands in the doghouse. When Grant (guest star Sharif Atkins) tells Shelly he's had an HIV test because he's ready to take their relationship to the next level, it sparks the whole gang to go get tested. Golden Brooks (UPN's GIRLFRIENDS) guest stars as Nurse LaDonna and Marteniz Brown, a HIV/AIDS educator from Detroit, guest stars as Roderick, a clinic counselor. Donovan's request for residency into the United States is denied; he is informed that he must leave the country within 30 days. JT realizes that he's still in love with Shelly.

When Grant tells Shelly he's had an HIV test because he's ready to take their relationship to the next level, it encourages the whole gang to get tested. Meanwhile, after seeing how serious Shelly has gotten with Grant, J.T. realizes he still loves her.

Shelly has to decide between two marriage proposals, by J.T. and Grant. Donovan, who skipped his flight back to England, is now living as an illegal citizen and he has to decide what to do with his life.

While spending Christmas at her mother's, Shelly wants to deck more than the halls when one of her mom's students, who's also staying there, replaces Shelly as the center of attention. Nick finally finds a woman he wants to date exclusively, only to have her tell him she's married. Meanwhile, Shelly discovers that Rita thinks her apartment is haunted.

Shelly and Janie cajole Rita to pretend she wants to get back together with Brenda after learning she's the buyer for a department store where they hope to display their clothing line. Donovan enlists Nick's help to win the money he lost in an expensive bet with J.T., by playing poker
