Based on Jean de Brunhoff's book series, it is the second Babar movie, following 1989's Babar: The Movie, and is also a remake of the 1989–1991 HBO television series. Because it follows the books closer than the series did, it contradicts it on several points. This is the very last film by Alliance Communications.
