Turner Classic Movies says the film was released in theatres in 1964.

A 1964 theatrical release (probably a limited theatrical) looks to be correct. However, I wonder about the 1963 premiere listed on IMDb. Whoever added that date to IMDb was very specific about it. 1961 was definitely wrong though so thanks for correcting.

True. I searched for that date alongside the film's name and nothing worthwhile appears. Strange.
